Awakening Through Numbness

Reclaiming Sensation: Moving Beyond Numbness

Many women come to me feeling what they describe as numbness. They often believe this means they aren’t feeling anything at all. However, numbness itself is a sensation and an emotional state that speaks volumes about their current condition.

Embodiment, as a practice, offers a pathway for women to reclaim these sensations, moving from numbness and disconnection back into presence, groundedness, and full-bodied awareness.

Understanding Numbness
Numbness manifests in various forms. Emotionally, it can mean feeling detached from life, situations, people, and even one's own emotions. This often translates into a sense of emptiness or hollowness, coupled with apathy. Some women struggle to connect with their feelings, unable to identify or express emotions like joy, sadness, or anger. When these emotions are deemed wrong or bad, they get suppressed, leading to emotional numbness and disembodiment. This suppression can also manifest physically, as the body carries the weight of unexpressed and unprocessed emotions.

Physical and Emotional Disconnection
Physical numbness is another layer of this experience. It can appear as a disconnection from bodily sensations, impacting areas like the heart and womb. This disconnection often extends to a diminished capacity for empathy and compassion towards oneself and others.

Decision-making becomes a challenge, leading to indecisiveness and an inability to align with desires and choices. This internal struggle can culminate in what’s known as functional freeze—a state of internal collapse or shutdown.

The Nervous System and Numbness
Emotional numbness profoundly affects the nervous system. It creates a sense of detachment from reality, making life feel like an observation rather than an active participation. This state brings about feelings of separation, disassociation, and disembodiment, sometimes accompanied by a desire to escape the body or earthly existence. Such disconnections from the nervous system often lead to a lack of motivation, drive, and curiosity, stifling creativity and the desire to engage with life.

Embodiment as a Path to Healing
Through the practice of embodiment, women can embark on a journey to reclaim their feelings and sensations. This practice helps move beyond numbness, fostering a re-connection with the body's landscape. By embracing embodiment, one can transition from disconnection to a state of presence and groundedness, unlocking the potential for a more vibrant, connected life.
